Words From Wells

Wells House & Garden

Welcome to Words from Wells! A blog set up to give you a glimpse into Wells and how we started, the people who made it what it is today and the people who are working to make it last for generations to come! This blog is not just about history but about the real lives of people from Ireland and beyond, our heritage, their pets, hobbies, talents and successes and even some of their secrets!

This will be a monthly blog on the last Monday of every month and to get your reminder why not join our monthly newsletter now.

Fairy Flo & the Hobbit King

Once upon a time deep in the woods of Wells there was a Hobbit King named Ulrich, who lived in Hobbiton Place. I don’t know how much you know about Hobbits, but they tend to be very short, grumpy and most importantly they love to stay at home!

The Life That Summer Brings to Wells

At Wells House & Gardens, not only can you revel in the life that’s currently a buzz, but you can also be transported to the lives of those that came before. As we enter the summer we at Wells reflect on the previous summers these fantastic grounds have witnessed and the lasting affect they have had.

Twas’ the Night before Christmas…

Twas’ the night before Christmas, when all through Wells House, not a creature was stirring, not even Wells mouse. The fairy stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there. After your activities our Picnic Area is adjacent to the playground so come prepared or pop into our restaurant for a selection of picnic delights or enjoy a take-away coffee while the children play!

James Shepherd, The Head Gardener of Wells 1907

Richard, the grandson of James Shepherd the head gardener at Wells House and Gardens in 1907. He came to visit the Wells Estate and especially to see the Gardeners Cottage. It was the most emotional and uplifting experience for him to see the house his mother Peggy was born in.

A Magical Christmas Encounter

Once upon a time, in the south east of Ireland, on the outskirts of town was Wells House. Inside the special and magical grounds was an enchanted forest filled with fairies and woodland creatures. The air was cold and crisp for it was the Winter season.

We have two woodland walks which are 1.2km each and promise to bring you on a journey of magic and wonder.

Look out for our all new Fantasy Walk!

Fairy Flo & The Ocean Fairy

Once upon a time in the mysterious and enchanted forest of Wells house there lived a community of little fairies & woodland creatures. All of the fairies were fast asleep tucked into their beds, all bar one, Fairy Flo. Flo had been up all night.

When Lightning Strikes…

Once upon a time, deep in the enchanted forest of Wells, the Autumn sun was splitting the stones and the woodland creatures were slowly waking up ready to take on a brand-new day. Fairy Flo had been up for quite a bit already. She was so excited she could not sleep!

Fairy Flo & The Magical Encounter

Once upon a time, in the beautiful, enchanted grounds of Wells House lived a young girl called Niamh. Niamh was a bit of an explorer, she loved running around the stables with all of the animals (even the little mice), getting stuck in the mud and finding new adventures every day.

A visit from the past…

Many of us have weird sensations when seeing shadows or shapes out of the corner of our eye, only for them to disappear when we turn to look and while you may be a nonbeliever or someone who is not afraid of such a paranormal experience, did you ever stop and wonder just what if something paranormal happened to you?

A Wells House Country Garden & Our Champion Oak

It was a gentleman named Robert Doyne and his wife and Annette Constantia who made all the design changes to Wells House in the early 1800s, that you see today. They employed the help of renowned architect of that time Daniel Robertson. Robertson was of Scottish decent, born in America but trained and worked in England. Robertson is a curious character of the time, descried as a flamboyant yet hard working gentleman that enjoyed the high life.
